Calculus of Love

Nose nearly touching the page,
In fierce concentration
He adds and subtracts,
Calculating what’s
Due and Owing.
Telling his beads
Like an abacus.
Here’s a newsflash:
Love, grace and
Redemption
Are not
Earned –
They come as
Free gifts.
Neither God nor
Human hearts
Are compelled
By merit.
