To Murillo’s Virgin of the Rosary

To Murillo’s Virgin of the Rosary
Betsy McKenzie

Dark, sad eyes, that looked so kind and loving.
Gentle hands – I longed for you to hold me!
To you I cried. Across time and death,
You reached out and comforted the child of another.
Oh, when I saw you again recently, how small,
What a terrible reproduction! The eyes of need,
They invest the object with such glory,
You have need of no other.
