Deep Changes

Deep Changes

Deep, down deep beneath the surface
Changes happen that no one can see.
Roots of the mountain crack and shift,
Magma rises, tectonic plates drift.

The periodic locusts live for years,
Underground in darkness before popping
Up like hordes of living popcorn
Red-eyed, black, thrumming lovelorn.

Acorns crack and put out tendrils,
Roots quest in the soil and rocks,
Fungus spreads along underground
Before ever mushrooms abound.

And so I changed like these things,
So deep, I hid it from myself.
There was a surface me to deal with things
But a deep, secret me growing secret wings.
