Roots
Roots
Some folks like to trace their roots.
Genealogy is all the rage.
Myself, I can’t see farther back
Than three generations on
My mother’s side,
Just two on my father’s.
I know better than to root around;
The pain and sorrow is too close
To the surface.
In my family, you don’t have to go far
To find rascals, and grief.
It’s romantic after two centuries,
Not after fifty years.
Some folks like to trace their roots.
Genealogy is all the rage.
Myself, I can’t see farther back
Than three generations on
My mother’s side,
Just two on my father’s.
I know better than to root around;
The pain and sorrow is too close
To the surface.
In my family, you don’t have to go far
To find rascals, and grief.
It’s romantic after two centuries,
Not after fifty years.
